The short answer
For hot flushes and sleep problems during the menopause, the reference remains hormone replacement therapy, to be discussed with a doctor. Hormone-free supplements sold for the menopause combine herbs (black cohosh, sage, lemon balm, saffron, fenugreek) whose effectiveness is modest at best and variable. They cost from 0.32 to 1.16 EUR per day. Two precautions matter more than price: black cohosh calls for liver monitoring, and vitamin K2 is incompatible with certain anticoagulants.

Four formulas, four approaches. Three products out of four share the same dose of saffron, 30 mg, and lemon balm appears in three as well. Beyond that, each one bets on a different herb: black cohosh at Nutrimea, sage at Sensilab, pollen and resveratrol at Novoma, fenugreek at Nat&Form.
What we know about the herbs used
Black cohosh: the most studied, with one precaution
Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) is the most studied herb for hot flushes, with results that vary from one trial to the next. The European Medicines Agency reports rare cases of liver damage and advises stopping it if you have unusual tiredness, dark urine or jaundice. Avoid it if you have liver disease.
Sage and lemon balm: traditional use
Sage has long been used against excessive sweating, and lemon balm for relaxation and sleep. Their status is that of traditional use: long-standing use considered safe, without solid proof of effectiveness.
Saffron: encouraging but small trials
Saffron at 30 mg per day, the dose in the three products that contain it, has been the subject of small trials on mood during the menopause. The results are promising but involve few participants.
Fenugreek, pollen, resveratrol: limited data
The ingredients specific to Nat&Form (Libifem fenugreek) and Novoma (pollen, resveratrol) are promoted by the manufacturers on the basis of studies of their branded ingredients. These data remain limited and have not been independently confirmed on a large scale.
Precautions to read before you buy
- VKA-type anticoagulants (warfarin, fluindione, etc.): the vitamin K2 in Nutrimea, Sensilab and Novoma interferes with them. Novoma states this clearly as a contraindication. Nat&Form contains none.
- History of hormone-dependent cancer: ask your doctor before taking any herb presented as acting on hormonal balance.
- Liver disease: avoid black cohosh.
- Antidepressants: the L-tryptophan in Nat&Form and saffron call for medical advice when taken together.
Which to choose, depending on your profile
To try at the lowest cost, Nutrimea: 0.32 EUR per day, with black cohosh and saffron, if you have neither liver disease nor anticoagulant treatment.
To avoid black cohosh, Sensilab’s M-Pause, based on sage, lemon balm and saffron, to be bought on promotion: its crossed-out price puts it at 1 EUR per day.
If you take a VKA anticoagulant, only Nat&Form, without vitamin K2, remains an option among our price checks, with your doctor’s agreement.
