How is body fat estimated?

This calculator uses the US Navy method, which estimates your body fat percentage from your height and a few circumferences (neck, waist, and hips for women). It is a recognised method, free and easy to repeat at home with a simple tape measure.

Why track body fat rather than weight?

Weight alone does not distinguish muscle from fat. Two people at the same weight can have very different body compositions. Tracking your body fat usefully complements your BMI and gives you a fairer picture of your fitness.

Frequently asked questions

Is the US Navy method reliable?
It is one of the most reliable measurement-based methods (margin of error of 3 to 4%). It is still an estimate: for medical-grade accuracy, only methods such as DEXA are the reference.
How do I measure my circumferences properly?
Measure the neck below the Adam’s apple, the waist at navel level (without pulling tight), and the hips at the widest point. Stay relaxed and keep the tape perfectly horizontal.
What body fat percentage should I aim for?
A « fitness » range is around 14-17% for a man and 21-24% for a woman. Below that, you enter athlete levels, which are harder to maintain healthily.
