Calculate your waist-to-hip ratio
The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is a measure of fat distribution recognised by the WHO, which complements BMI. Check your risk in 10 seconds. Free and instant.
Your measurements
At navel level, without pulling tight.
At the widest point.
Your result
A large waist reflects abdominal fat, which is more closely linked to cardiovascular risk than fat on the hips.
WHO thresholds
| Risk | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Low | under 0.90 | under 0.80 |
| Moderate | 0.90 to 0.99 | 0.80 to 0.84 |
| High | 1.0 or more | 0.85 or more |
Why measure your waist-to-hip ratio?
The WHR assesses where your body stores fat, whereas BMI only measures overall body size. Fat building up around the belly (an « apple » shape) is more strongly associated with cardiovascular and metabolic risk than fat stored on the hips and thighs (a « pear » shape).
How can you improve it?
Reducing abdominal fat means a small calorie deficit, regular activity and a diet rich in fibre and protein. Our weight loss guides and our health guides set out the effective levers.
