Tips
Absolutely not recommended if you have kidney failure. This is the essential information on this page. Starfruit contains a neurotoxin, caramboxin, which healthy kidneys clear without difficulty. With kidney failure, it builds up and causes serious neurological problems, sometimes fatal.
It is also high in oxalates. Limit it if you have a history of calcium oxalate kidney stones, even with working kidneys.
28.4 kcal: one of the least energy-dense fruits in our database. With 34.4 mg of vitamin C, or 43% of the reference intake, the ratio is excellent for anyone not affected by the caveats above.
Choose one that is properly yellow. Green, it is very sour; yellow with slightly brown ridges, it is ripe and much sweeter.
Sliced, it decorates effortlessly. This is its most common use in Europe: a few stars on a fruit salad or a cake, more for looks than for flavour.
