Strawberry ice cream

Strawberry ice cream is a great classic of frozen desserts, loved for its soft colour and fruity scent. Made from milk, cream, sugar and strawberry purée, it comes in artisan, industrial or lighter versions, and is served in scoops, in a sundae glass or alongside pastries. With around 191 kcal per 100 g, it provides 26.1 g of carbohydrate, 8.4 g of fat and 2.5 g of protein. Milder than a chocolate dessert, it remains a sugary product to enjoy with gusto. Knowing its nutrition facts and its taste benefits helps you give it a sensible place in a balanced diet, without guilt.

Tips

Strawberry ice cream is best enjoyed well chilled but slightly softened for a few minutes out of the freezer, to bring out all its aromas. A sensible portion is one to two scoops, around 50 to 100 g. Beyond that, the calories and sugars add up quickly, because this dessert is still fairly energy-dense.

How should you eat it? Here are a few ideas for enjoying it sensibly:

  • At the end of a light meal, rather than after an already rich dinner;
  • Served with fresh fruit (strawberries, raspberries) to add fibre and freshness;
  • In a homemade version, with less added sugar and more fruit pulp;
  • As an occasional alternative to vanilla ice cream or chocolate ice cream, which are higher in fat.

Key nutrients. Strawberry ice cream provides fast carbohydrate (lactose and sucrose), fat from the cream and a small amount of dairy protein. Its fibre content is low (0.9 g). Its glycaemic index is moderate to high depending on the recipe, hence the value of moderation. If you are watching your sugar intake, you can compare it with an orange sorbet, which is generally lower in fat because it contains no cream.

Tip for active people. After an intense effort, a small portion of strawberry ice cream can contribute to carbohydrate replenishment, but it is not the most complete option for recovery. Favour a proper snack combining carbohydrate and protein: for inspiration, discover our protein snack ideas. When bulking, it can serve as an occasional calorie treat; when cutting or losing weight, keep it for well-planned indulgent meals.

Weight control. The energy density comes mostly from sugar and fat. To avoid overdoing it, serve yourself into a small ramekin rather than eating straight from the tub, and savour it slowly. Lighter versions exist, but read the labels carefully: they may contain other additions. To place this dessert among all the sugary foods and compare their intakes, also see the food calorie table.

Storage. Keep it at -18 °C, close the packaging well and avoid thawing and refreezing, which spoil the texture and encourage ice crystals to form.
