Tips
22.2 kcal: it is one of the least energy-dense fruits in the database. A generous 200 g slice provides 44 kcal. Its name suggests otherwise, but it is less sweet than an apple.
18 mg of vitamin C: 23% of the reference intake. A 200 g portion provides 36 mg, nearly half the daily need.
228 mg of potassium, in a very watery fruit. With its water content, it is a good summer fruit, especially after exercise when you lose electrolytes through sweat.
It hardly ripens at all after picking. Choose one that is heavy, with waxy skin and slightly give at the end opposite the stalk. Hard, dry skin signals a fruit with no flavour.
Listeriosis: wash the skin before cutting. The knife carries whatever is on the surface into the flesh. This advice applies to all melons, and particularly to pregnant women.
