AB organic label (Agriculture Biologique)
The official French label guaranteeing that a product comes from organic farming (at least 95% organic ingredients), without synthetic pesticides or GMOs, under strict specifications.
The AB label, created in 1985 by the French Ministry of Agriculture, now coexists with the European organic label (the Euro-leaf, a green leaf made of stars), mandatory since 2010. Both guarantee the same standards: at least 95% organic agricultural ingredients, no synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, no GMOs, respect for animal welfare.
An original angle (the little-known nuances):
- Organic does not mean zero pesticides: organic farming allows certain pesticides of natural origin (copper, sulphur, rotenone historically). “Natural” does not mean harmless: copper sulphate accumulates in soils.
- Organic does not mean local: an organic avocado from Peru travels thousands of km. The carbon impact can outweigh the organic benefit.
- Organic does not guarantee better nutritional value: studies are mixed; differences in vitamins and minerals are often modest. The real documented benefit is reduced exposure to synthetic pesticide residues and a better omega-3 profile for organic animal products.
The strongest benefit of organic is environmental (biodiversity, soils, water) rather than purely nutritional. An organic ultra-processed product (an organic biscuit full of sugar) is still ultra-processed: the organic label does not redeem a poor formulation.
