Cocktail sausages

The cocktail sausage is a small cooked sausage, sold in jars or vacuum packs, served with drinks and often wrapped in puff pastry. It is the format that causes the problem, more than the product: nobody ever counts how many they eat.

Tips

A cocktail sausage weighs 10 g: count 29 kcal. The problem is that you take ten without thinking: 290 kcal and 2.1 g of salt, or 42% of the daily guideline, with drinks.

Puff pastry doubles the bill. A sausage roll weighs about 25 g in total, and the pastry provides more calories than the sausage itself. It is the worst ratio on the drinks table.

25.9 g of fat for 12.7 g of protein. Fine mincing requires a fatty emulsion, as with Strasbourg sausage.

It counts towards the charcuterie guideline. 150 g a week, across all products, according to the Programme National Nutrition Santé (PNNS, the French national nutrition programme).

Serve them in a small bowl, not from the jar. This is the only tip that works on this product: a visible portion can be counted, an open jar cannot.
