Nutritional benefits

This smoothie is a simple, tasty way to eat whole fruit (with its fibre, unlike juices). Blueberries are particularly rich in anthocyanins, protective antioxidants, and in vitamin C. Banana provides potassium and an energising natural sugar, and the yoghurt (or a fortified plant-based drink) protein and calcium. With no added sugar, it is a balanced breakfast or snack, ideal for children as well as for a vitamin-packed pick-me-up.

Variations and substitutions

  • Lactose-free: plant-based drink and plant-based yoghurt.
  • Higher in protein: a scoop of protein powder or chia seeds.
  • Smoothie bowl: use less liquid and top with granola and fruit.
  • Other fruit: raspberries, mango, strawberries.

Storage and making ahead

A smoothie is best drunk just after making it to get the most from its vitamins. You can freeze bags of banana and blueberries, ready to blend in the morning with the liquid for a quick smoothie.

💡 Good to know

Use a very ripe banana (or frozen fruit) for a naturally sweet, nicely chilled smoothie, with no need to add sugar or too many ice cubes.
