Fancy chocolate in 2 minutes? This protein mug cake is made right in a mug and cooked in the microwave. Soft, chocolatey and far more balanced than a classic cake thanks to the protein powder and the absence of butter, it is the ideal express dessert for an indulgent snack after training.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Mash the banana in a large mug.
  2. Add the egg, protein powder, cocoa, baking powder and milk. Mix well with a fork.

  4. Leave to cool for 1 minute and eat with a spoon.

Nutritional benefits

This mug cake turns a sweet craving into a functional snack: with around 33 g of protein, it supports muscle recovery after a session, where a classic cake would only provide sugar and fat. The banana sweetens the batter naturally and provides potassium, the cocoa antioxidants, and the absence of butter limits saturated fat. With no wheat flour, it also suits people avoiding gluten. The clever athlete’s dessert.

Variations and substitutions

  • Egg-free: replace with 2 tbsp apple purée or yoghurt.
  • Extra gooey: add a few dark chocolate chips in the centre.
  • Peanut butter: a spoonful in the middle for a molten effect.
  • Vanilla: vanilla protein powder plus red berries instead of the cocoa.

Storage and making ahead

The mug cake is eaten straight out of the microwave, which is the whole point. You can prepare a dry mix (protein powder, cocoa and baking powder) in advance in several bags, ready to be topped up with an egg and a banana when needed.

💡 Good to know

Watch the cooking closely: 10 seconds too long and the mug cake turns dry. Take it out when the top is just set, it finishes cooking in the residual heat.
