Ingredients

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Mash the ripe bananas with a fork, then mix in the oats (and the chocolate chips if using).
  3. Shape small flattened mounds on the tray.
  4. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the edges are golden. Leave to cool before eating.

Nutritional benefits

These cookies are a healthy snack designed with children in mind: with no added sugar, all their sweetness comes from very ripe banana, which is rich in potassium. Oats provide complex carbohydrate and filling fibre, for steadier energy than a shop-bought biscuit and less of a sugar spike. With no butter or dairy, they suit people who are lactose intolerant. An excellent way to introduce children to home cooking, healthier than processed snacks.

Variations and substitutions

  • Gluten-free: use oats certified gluten-free.
  • More indulgent: dark chocolate chips, raisins or chopped walnuts.
  • Flavoured: a pinch of cinnamon or vanilla.
  • Higher in protein: add 1 tbsp of peanut butter.

Storage and making ahead

These cookies keep for 3 to 4 days in an airtight tin and freeze well. Made at the weekend, they provide homemade snacks for several days.

💡 Good to know

The more spotty the banana, the sweeter the cookies: that is the trick for doing without added sugar. Let them cool completely, as they hold together better once cold.
