Method
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan). Peel and dice the apples and place them in a dish with the cinnamon.
- Mix the oats, ground almonds, melted coconut oil and maple syrup until the texture is sandy.
- Spread this crumble over the apples.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the top is golden. Serve warm.
Nutritional benefits
This version of the crumble swaps white flour and excess butter for oats, ground almonds and a little coconut oil: you gain fibre, healthy fats and plant protein, while cutting the sugar thanks to the maple syrup and the natural sweetness of the apples. Apples provide pectin (a fibre) and antioxidants. The result is a warming, indulgent dessert that is noticeably more filling and balanced than a traditional crumble.
Variations and substitutions
- With other fruit: pears, apple and berries, rhubarb, peaches.
- Nut-free: replace the ground almonds with more oats.
- Vegan: it already is (coconut oil, no butter).
- Higher in protein: add seeds or a scoop of protein powder to the crumble.
Storage and making ahead
The crumble keeps for 3 days in the fridge and can be reheated in the oven to regain its crunch. Enjoy it warm, perhaps with plain yoghurt or banana nice cream for a complete dessert.
💡 Good to know
For a really crunchy topping, do not press it down too much on the fruit and make sure the coconut oil is well distributed. A crumble is best eaten warm, straight from the oven.
