Marble cake: its pretty vanilla and chocolate swirls and soft crumb make it children’s favourite teatime treat. Homemade, it is less sweet and more tender than shop-bought versions.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Whisk the eggs, sugar, yoghurt and oil, then add the flour and baking powder.
  2. Divide the batter in two and stir the cocoa into one half.
  3. Pour the two batters alternately into a loaf tin.
  4. Swirl with a knife and bake for 40 minutes at 170 °C.

Nutritional benefits

Lightened with yoghurt rather than butter, this marble cake is more sensible than a classic pound cake. Unsweetened cocoa gives the chocolate flavour with little sugar. A homemade teatime treat without additives, perfect for children.

Variations and swaps

  • Chocolate and hazelnut marble cake.
  • Semi-wholemeal flour.
  • With chocolate chips.
  • Dark chocolate icing.

Storage and making ahead

Keeps for 5 days wrapped and freezes well; stays moist for several days.

💡 Good to know

For a lovely marbled effect, pour the two batters in alternating layers, then simply run a knife through in a zigzag: do not mix too much, or the colours merge.
