Ingredients

Method

  1. In a jar, mix the oats, milk, yoghurt, cocoa and chia seeds.
  2. Mash half the banana and stir it in.
  3. Close the jar and put it in the fridge overnight (at least 6 hours).
  4. In the morning, stir and top with the rest of the banana, sliced.

Nutritional benefits

Like all overnight oats, this breakfast relies on oats and their beta-glucans, soluble fibres that help maintain normal cholesterol levels and slow the absorption of carbohydrate (low glycaemic index). Unsweetened cocoa provides antioxidants and an indulgent flavour with no added sugar, the banana adds sweetness and potassium, and the yoghurt and chia seeds supply protein and healthy fats. A complete, filling, chocolatey breakfast that the whole family approves of.

Variations and substitutions

  • Dairy-free: plant-based drink and yoghurt.
  • More protein: a scoop of chocolate protein powder.
  • “Brownie” style: add dark chocolate chips.
  • With fruit: red berries or peanut butter.

Storage and make-ahead

Overnight oats keep for 2 to 3 days in the fridge: make several jars ahead for ready-made breakfasts all week. Add the fresh banana on the morning itself to stop it going brown.

💡 Good to know

Unsweetened cocoa (rather than a sweetened drinking chocolate powder) gives the chocolate taste with no added sugar. A really ripe banana is enough to sweeten everything naturally.
