Ingredients

Method

  1. Peel the apples and cut them into pieces.
  2. Put them in a saucepan with the water and lemon juice.
  3. Cover and cook gently for 20 minutes.
  4. Mash with a fork (or blend) and flavour with cinnamon.

Nutritional benefits

With no added sugar, homemade compote contains only the fibre and natural sugars of the apples, which is far less than shop-bought versions. Rich in pectin and fibre, it is a healthy dessert, ideal for children and for snacks.

Variations and substitutions

  • Apple and pear, or apple and rhubarb.
  • With vanilla.
  • With the skin (blended, more fibre).
  • No cooking (grated apples).

Storage and making ahead

Keeps for 5 days in the fridge and can be frozen; put it in sterilised jars to keep it for longer.

💡 Good to know

Choose very ripe, sweet apples (golden or reinette types): there is no need to add sugar, as the fruit does the job.
