Ingredients
Method
- Cut the avocado into small dice.
- Flake the tuna and chop the shallot.
- Mix with the lemon, chives and oil.
- Shape into a ring on the plate and serve chilled.
Nutritional benefits
Tuna provides lean protein and omega-3, and avocado adds good monounsaturated fats and fibre, both of which are good for the heart and cholesterol. Low in carbohydrate and needing no cooking, this tartare is a fresh, quick and balanced starter.
Variations and substitutions
- With fresh or smoked salmon.
- With mango for a touch of sweetness.
- Spiced up with chilli and ginger.
- On wholemeal toast (no longer low carb).
Storage and making ahead
Best eaten immediately, as avocado turns brown. Lemon slows the oxidation.
💡 Good to know
Choose an avocado that is ripe but firm and cut it into neat dice: the tartare holds together better and looks better on the plate.
