Ingredients

Method

  1. Pour the oats and milk into a saucepan.
  2. Heat for 4 to 5 minutes over a low heat, stirring, until thickened.
  3. Mash half the banana and stir it in, along with the cinnamon.
  4. Pour into a bowl, add the rest of the banana in slices and the almond butter.

Nutritional benefits

This porridge is a complete breakfast that is gentle on the stomach, welcome when you have pregnancy nausea. The oats provide slow-release complex carbohydrate and fibre for steady energy all morning, the milk calcium and protein (needs are higher during pregnancy and childhood growth), and the banana potassium and natural sugar. The almond butter adds healthy fats, magnesium and a little plant protein. With no added sugar, it is a healthy breakfast suitable for the whole family.

Variations and substitutions

  • Lactose-free: plant-based drink fortified with calcium.
  • Higher in protein: add a scoop of protein powder or chia seeds.
  • Fruit: red berries, pear or apple instead of the banana.
  • Crunchy: a few chopped almonds or toasted flakes.

Storage and making ahead

Porridge is ideally eaten hot and freshly made, but can be reheated the next day with a little milk. For a cold version to take away, prepare it the night before as overnight oats.

💡 Good to know

If you have morning sickness, a warm, mild porridge like this one often goes down better than a savoury or acidic breakfast. Eat slowly, in small amounts.
